**Karen Elizabeth Stives** (November 3, 1950 – August 14, 2015) was an American [eventing](/source/Eventing) competitor and Olympic champion.[1][2]

## Olympics

Stives qualified for the 1980 U.S. Olympic team but did not compete due to the U.S. Olympic Committee's [boycott of the 1980 Summer Olympics](/source/1980_Summer_Olympics_boycott) in Moscow, Russia. She was one of 461 athletes to receive a [Congressional Gold Medal](/source/List_of_Congressional_Gold_Medal_recipients) instead.[3] At the [1984 Olympic Games](/source/1984_Summer_Olympics) in [Los Angeles](/source/Los_Angeles), Stives anchored the United States team that received a gold medal in [Team eventing](/source/Equestrian_at_the_1984_Summer_Olympics), and also an individual silver medal.[2][4]
