There were two groups that went by this name, the '''Garandi''' ('''Karandi'''), after the [Garandi language](/source/Garandi_language), and the '''Gkuthaarn''' ('''Kutanda''', '''Kuthant''', '''Kotanda'''), after the [Gkuthaarn language](/source/Gkuthaarn_language). It is not clear if they constituted a single people, but it appears that there were two dialects in the same area.{{AIATSIS|G31|Gkuthaarn}}{{AIATSIS|G32|Garandi}} In addition, Tindale said that "Kotanda", sometimes used for both the Gkuthaarn and Garandi languages but also applied to the [Kalibamu](/source/Kalibamu) people, was also sometimes used for the Kareldi people.{{AIATSIS|G27| Kalibamu}} ==Country== The Kareldi held, in Tindale's estimation, some {{convert|1,500|mi2|km2}} of land, extending over the [mouth of the Norman River](/source/Norman_River) and westwards from [Normanton](/source/Normanton%2C_Queensland) to the [Flinders River](/source/Flinders_River). Their domain included [Karumba](/source/Karumba%2C_Queensland) and the Swinburne River. Their inland extension went as far as Milgarra, Maggieville, and Stirling.{{sfn|Tindale|1974|p=174}} W.E. Armit, Inspector of [Native Police](/source/Native_Police), had earlier written in [Curr](/source/Edward_Micklethwaite_Curr)'s 1886 volume that the land of the "Karrandee tribe" commenced at the mouth of the River Bryce, passed the mouth of the Norman River, and continued along the coast to a saltwater creek within {{convert|15|mi}} of the [Gilbert](/source/Gilbert_River_(Queensland)), and extended inland as far as Magowra Station and Walker's Creek, comprising around {{convert|2000|mi2}}.{{sfn|Armit|1886|p=306}} ===Frontier wars=== When European settlers moved into the [Gulf of Carpentaria](/source/Gulf_of_Carpentaria) region and established [Normanton](/source/Normanton%2C_Queensland) in the 1870s, there were an estimated seven [Aboriginal peoples](/source/Aboriginal_Australians) in the area, and the [frontier wars](/source/Australian_frontier_wars) blurred and confused the boundaries of traditional lands. By the 1920s, many Aboriginal people had been forcibly removed to [Aboriginal reserve](/source/Aboriginal_reserve)s and [missions](/source/mission_station). The Gkuthaarn and [Kukatj](/source/Kukatj) people who remained lived in camps along the south-western side of the town, while others, such as the [Kurtijar](/source/Kurtjar) people, camped north of the [Norman River](/source/Norman_River). ===Native title=== On 29 September 2020, the [Kukatj](/source/Kukatj) and [Gkuthaarn](/source/Gkuthaarn) peoples won a [native title determination](/source/native_title_in_Australia) over more than {{convert|16,000|km2}} west of the [Norman River](/source/Norman_River), including [Normanton](/source/Normanton%2C_Queensland), as far as the [Leichhardt River](/source/Leichhardt_River).
