**Karatara** is a town in [Knysna Local Municipality](/source/Knysna_Local_Municipality) in the [Western Cape](/source/Western_Cape) province of [South Africa](/source/South_Africa).

Settlement and forestry station on the [Karatara River](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Karatara_River&action=edit&redlink=1) which flows southwards into [Swartvlei](/source/Swartvlei). It is situated 5 km west of [Barrington](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Barrington,_South_Africa&action=edit&redlink=1) and some 40 km northwest of [Knysna](/source/Knysna). It was founded in 1941. The name is of Khoekhoen origin and probably means 'horse hill', after a hillock to the north. Previously the Karatara River was known as the Tsao or Witterivier.[2]
