'''Kangavarma''' ({{reign|{{circa|360}}|385 CE}}{{sfn|Karashima|2014|p=369}}) or '''Kangavarman''' was the second ruler of the [Kadamba dynasty](/source/Kadamba_dynasty) in [South India](/source/South_India). His name is sometimes also read as '''Skandavarman'''.<ref name = "classical">{{cite book |author1=R. Sathianathaier|editor1-last=Majumdar |editor1-first=R.C. |title=The Classical Age |date=1997 |publisher=Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan |page=272 |edition=Fifth}}</ref> Kangavarma succeeded his father [Mayurasharma](/source/Mayurasharma), the founder of the Kadamba kingdom.

==Life==
The [Talagunda pillar inscription](/source/Talagunda_pillar_inscription) indicates that Kangavarma's reign was a turbulent one with many bitter wars.<ref name="Mishra1979">{{cite book|last=Mishra|first=Phanikanta|title=The Kadambas|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=voseAAAAMAAJ|year=1979|publisher=Mithila Prakasana|pages=19–20}}</ref> Although we lack details of the wars which Kangavarma had to face, it is likely that the [Vakatakas](/source/Vakatakas) were among his foremost enemies. In particular, Kangavarman's contemporary to the north was the Vakataka king [Vindhyasena](/source/Vindhyasena) of Vatsagulma or [Prithvisena I](/source/Prithvisena_I),{{sfn|Moraes|1931|p=18}} who is credited with a victory against the Kadambas.{{sfn|Upinder Singh|2016|p=484}} While some scholars agree that Kangavarma suffered defeat at the hands of the Vakatakas,<ref name = "classical"/><ref>{{cite book |last1=Jouveau-Dubreuil |first1=Gabriel |title=Ancient History of the Deccan |date=1920 |location=Pondicherry |pages=99–100 |url=https://archive.org/details/ancienthistoryof00jouvrich/}}</ref> other scholars believe that Kangavarma was mostly successful in resisting the Vakataka invasion and preserving the independence of the Kadamba kingdom.{{sfn|Moraes|1931|p=18}}{{sfn|Sastri|1961|p=110}}

Kangavarma assumed the title ''Dharmamahārājadhirāja'', which continued to be used by his successors. Similar titles were used by other dynasties of South India including the [Pallavas](/source/Pallavas) and the later [Chalukyas of Badami](/source/Chalukyas_of_Badami), as well as by the Vakataka rivals of the Kadambas.{{sfn|Upinder Singh|2016|pp=481-482}} Kangavarma also used the surname of ''[varma](/source/varma_(surname))'' (which was historically associated with the [Kshatriya](/source/Kshatriya) caste) instead of ''sharma'', a convention which many later Kadamba kings followed. Kangavarma was succeeded on the Kadamba throne by his son [Bhageerath](/source/Bhageerath).
