**Kalutara District** ([Sinhala](/source/Sinhala_language): කළුතර දිස්ත්‍රික්කය; [Tamil](/source/Tamil_language): களுத்துறை மாவட்டம் *Kaḷuttuṟai Māvaṭṭam*) is one of the 25 [districts](/source/Districts_of_Sri_Lanka) of [Sri Lanka](/source/Sri_Lanka), the second level [administrative division](/source/Administrative_division) of the country. The district is administered by a District Secretariat headed by a [District Secretary](/source/Government_Agent_(Sri_Lanka)) (previously known as a [Government Agent](/source/Government_Agent_(Sri_Lanka))) appointed by the [central government of Sri Lanka](/source/Government_of_Sri_Lanka). The capital of the district is the city of [Kalutara](/source/Kalutara) .

## Geography

Kalutara District is located in the south-west of Sri Lanka and has an area of 1,598 square kilometres (617 sq mi).[1] It is bounded by [Colombo District](/source/Colombo_District) in the north, [Ratnapura District](/source/Ratnapura_District) in the east, [Galle District](/source/Galle_District) in the south, and the [Indian Ocean](/source/Indian_Ocean) in the west.[4]

## Administrative units

Kalutara District is divided into 14 [Divisional Secretary's Division](/source/Divisional_Secretary's_Division) (DS Divisions), each headed by a Divisional Secretary (previously known as an Assistant Government Agent).[5] The DS Divisions are further sub-divided into 762 [Grama Niladhari](/source/Grama_Niladhari) Divisions (GN Divisions).[5]
