The ship was built at [Nobiskrug](/source/Nobiskrug) shipyard in [Rendsburg](/source/Rendsburg), [Germany](/source/Germany) and launched on July 26, 1930,<ref name="greatlakesschooner">{{cite web |url=http://www.greatlakesschooner.com/toronto-cruise-ship-kajama-history.html |title=''Kajama'' - A History |work=Great Lakes Schooner Company |year=2012 |accessdate=5 September 2012}}</ref> under the name ''Wilfried''.<ref name="videnscenter">{{cite web |url=http://www.maritime-museum.dk/videnscenter/documents/K-K.pdf |title=Knowledge Center - Ships "K" |work=Danish Maritime Museum |year=2012 |accessdate=5 September 2012 }}{{Dead link|date=February 2020 |bot=InternetArchiveBot |fix-attempted=yes }}</ref> Captain Wilhelm Wilckens was her owner and master and he operated from the homeport of [Hamburg](/source/Hamburg) from 1930 until 1960.<ref name="greatlakesschooner"/> The ''Wilfried'' had 11 sister ships and belonged to the type "Ich verdiene" ("I earn"). In 1960 she was purchased<ref name="greatlakesschooner"/> by Captain Andreas Kohler Asmussen<ref name="videnscenter"/> of Egersund, Denmark. Asmussen renamed the ship ''Kajama'' after his two sons and his wife '''Ka'''ywe, '''Ja'''n and '''Ma'''ria.<ref name="greatlakesschooner"/>

The ship continued to work under sail until the mid-1970s, at which time the Asmussens converted her to a strictly motor-driven vessel. In the spring of 1998 Captain Asmussen suffered a fatal cardiac arrest while at the helm. As he was the only crew on watch at the time the ship went up on a beach near [Malmö](/source/Malm%C3%B6), [Sweden](/source/Sweden). Drydocking determined that little damage had been suffered.

Throughout the years from 1930 until 1998 ''Kajama'' traded general cargo. Her voyages went as far south as [Bilbao](/source/Bilbao) in Northwest Spain, throughout western [Europe](/source/Europe), and [Scandinavia](/source/Scandinavia), and above the [Arctic Circle](/source/Arctic_Circle) in Northern Norway.<ref name="greatlakesschooner"/>

In January 1999 she was purchased by [Great Lakes Schooner Company](/source/Great_Lakes_Schooner_Company) of [Toronto, Ontario](/source/Toronto%2C_Ontario), Canada. After preparation for sea she steamed to [England](/source/England), Azores and on to Toronto. ''Kajama'' underwent a major overhaul and restoration to her original profile in just over ten months.<ref name="greatlakesschooner"/> She is now operating on Lake Ontario, based in [Toronto Harbour](/source/Toronto_Harbour).
