**K Centauri** is a possible binary [star](/source/Star) in the southern [constellation](/source/Constellation) of [Centaurus](/source/Centaurus). It has a white hue and is bright enough to be visible to the naked eye, having an [apparent visual magnitude](/source/Apparent_visual_magnitude) of +5.04.

K Centauri is located at a distance of approximately 410 [light years](/source/Light_year) from the [Sun](/source/Sun) based on [parallax](/source/Stellar_parallax), and it has an [absolute magnitude](/source/Absolute_magnitude) of −0.91.[1] This is an ordinary [A-type main-sequence star](/source/A-type_main-sequence_star) with a [stellar classification](/source/Stellar_classification) of A1V.[3] It is spinning rapidly with a [projected rotational velocity](/source/Projected_rotational_velocity) of 220 km/s,[6] which is giving it a pronounced [equatorial bulge](/source/Equatorial_bulge) that is 25% larger than the polar radius.[8]

Analysis of [Hipparcos](/source/Hipparcos) and [Gaia](/source/Gaia_(spacecraft)) [astrometry](/source/Astrometry) suggests that the relatively large margins of error in the calculated parallax may be due to orbital motion caused by an unseen companion. The companion would be an 81 [MJ](/source/Jupiter_mass) object orbiting at about 2 [AU](/source/Astronomical_unit).[4]
