Ancient Greek vase painter

A tripod *[exaleiptron](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Exaleiptron&action=edit&redlink=1)* by the KX Painter, *circa 580/570 BC*, found in [Aegina](/source/Aegina); now [Louvre](/source/Louvre) CA 927

The **KX Painter** was an [Attic](/source/Attica) [black-figure](/source/Black-figure_vase_painting) vase painter. He was active between 585 and 570 BC. Besides the [KY Painter](/source/KY_Painter), the KX Painter was the main representative of the [Comast Group](/source/Comast_Group), which succeeded the [Gorgon Painter](/source/Gorgon_Painter). His conventional name was allocated by [John Beazley](/source/John_Beazley). He is considered the better and chronologically somewhat earlier representative of the group. He was the first painter in [Athens](/source/Athens) to occasionally depict [komasts](/source/Komos) on his vases, a motif adopted from [Corinthian vase painting](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Corinthian_vase_painting&action=edit&redlink=1). He mainly painted *[skyphoi](/source/Skyphos)*, *[lekanes](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Lekanis&action=edit&redlink=1)*, *[kothones](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Kothon&action=edit&redlink=1)* and [Komast cups](/source/Komast_cup). In contrast to later representatives of the group, he still mostly painted animals, in a more careful and powerful style than the Gorgon Painter. Some [mythological](/source/Greek_mythology) scenes by him are also known. Especially famous are his small-fornat mythical scenes placed within animal friezes. The KX Painter can be considered the first Attic painter to achieve a quality at par with that reached in [Corinth](/source/Ancient_Corinth), then the dominant centre of Greek vase painting. Imitations of his works are known from [Boeotia](/source/Boeotia).
