NEPH1 is a member of the NEPH protein family, which includes NEPH2 ([KIRREL3](/source/KIRREL3), [MIM](/source/Online_Mendelian_Inheritance_in_Man) [http://omim.org/entry/607761 607761]) and NEPH3 ([KIRREL2](/source/KIRREL2), [MIM](/source/Online_Mendelian_Inheritance_in_Man) [http://omim.org/entry/607762 607762]). The cytoplasmic domains of these proteins interact with the C terminus of [podocin](/source/podocin) (NPHS2; MIM 604766). NEPH1 is expressed in [filtration slits](/source/filtration_slits) of kidney [podocytes](/source/podocytes), cells involved in ensuring size- and charge-selective [ultrafiltration](/source/Ultrafiltration_(renal)) of [blood](/source/blood) (Sellin et al., 2003).
