# K-Hito

**K-Hito** was the [pseudonym](/source/Pseudonym) of **Ricardo García López** (1890–1984), Spanish humorist, [caricaturist](/source/Caricaturist), [bullfighting](/source/Bullfighting) critic, film producer, and [magazine](/source/Magazine) publisher. Considered part of the [Generation of '27](/source/Generation_of_'27), he was the founder and director of four magazines, in the pages of which he created several characters, such as *[Gutiérrez](/source/Guti%C3%A9rrez_(magazine))*, *Macaco*, *Currinche*, and *Don Turulato*.[1]

## Career

He was born in [Villanueva del Arzobispo](/source/Villanueva_del_Arzobispo), [Jaén Province](/source/Province_of_Ja%C3%A9n_(Spain)) in 1890, and grew up in [Alicante](/source/Alicante). He began drawing at the age of four.[2] At Alicante, he studied at the Parrilla academy and worked in a [post office](/source/Post_office).[2] In 1907, he moved to [Valencia](/source/Valencia,_Spain), where he began to collaborate in humor magazines and offered the first exposition of his work in 1912 in the Círculo de Bellas Artes.[2]

He subsequently founded the magazine *Gutiérrez*, precursor to *[La Codorniz](/source/La_Codorniz)*. He served as the editor of the children's magazines *Macaco* and *Macaquete*. *Macaco*, the name of both the title character and the magazine that featured it, was started in 1928. However, it folded and the Macaco [comic strip](/source/Comic_strip) was transferred to *Macaquete*.[3] In the process of the transfer, Macaco was featured in a continuity strip rather than in a gag strip.[3]

He also contributed to *Gracia y Justicia*, a periodical critical of [Azaña](/source/Manuel_Aza%C3%B1a), [President](/source/President_of_the_Republic_(Spain)) of the [Second Spanish Republic](/source/Second_Spanish_Republic). He also contributed to *Le Journal*, *[Pinocho](/source/Pinocho)*, *[ABC](/source/ABC_(newspaper))*, *[Blanco y Negro](/source/Blanco_y_Negro_(newspaper))*, *El Debate*, *Ya*, *Informaciones*, *Ahora*. He became famous through his caricatures in the newspaper known as *El Debate*.[2]

With [Joaquín Xaudaró](/source/Joaqu%C3%ADn_Xaudar%C3%B3) and [Antonio Got](/source/Antonio_Got), he founded the *Sociedad Española de Dibujos Animados* (*SEDA*) in 1932.[4] Most of the films produced by SEDA have been lost, although there exist some copies of the film "Falsa noticia de fútbol".[2]

During the [Spanish Civil War](/source/Spanish_Civil_War), he lived in Valencia, and worked there as a professor of [calligraphy](/source/Calligraphy) at the *Academia Comercial Morales*.[2] He worked under his real name; using his pseudonym was dangerous, as he had published under it a number of articles lampooning the *milicianos*, or anti-fascist militias.[2]

In 1940, he founded the weekly magazine *Dígame*, serving as its editor.[5] Collaborating with him at *Dígame* and *Gutiérrez* were [Enrique Jardiel Poncela](/source/Enrique_Jardiel_Poncela), [Edgar Neville](/source/Edgar_Neville), [Miguel Mihura](/source/Miguel_Mihura), [José López Rubio](/source/Jos%C3%A9_L%C3%B3pez_Rubio) and [Tono](/source/Tono_(humorist)) (Antonio Lara de Gavilán).[2] He also collaborated with [Gabriel Miró](/source/Gabriel_Mir%C3%B3).[6]

K-Hito also worked as a bullfighting critic (as a boy he had wanted to be a [bullfighter](/source/Bullfighter)), and his work appeared in bullfighting chronicles (*crónicas taurinas*).[5] He is credited with reconciling two bitter enemies, the bullfighters [Manolete](/source/Manolete) and [Carlos Arruza](/source/Carlos_Arruza), who at K-Hito's instigation, hugged one another in the cartoonist's natal town of Villanueva del Arzobispo.

En 1949, Villanueva del Arzobispo named him an Adoptive Son and named a street after him.[2]
