'Königslutter on the [Elm](/source/Elm_(hills))') is a [town](/source/List_of_cities_and_towns_in_Germany) in the district of [Helmstedt](/source/Helmstedt_(district)) in [Lower Saxony](/source/Lower_Saxony), [Germany](/source/Germany). ## Geography It is located on the northeastern slopes of the [Elm](/source/Elm_(hills)) hill range, within the [Elm-Lappwald Nature Park](/source/Elm-Lappwald_Nature_Park), about 23 km (14 mi) east of [Brunswick](/source/Braunschweig), 15 km (9.3 mi) west of the district capital [Helmstedt](/source/Helmstedt), and 20 km (12 mi) south of [Wolfsburg](/source/Wolfsburg). The town has access to the [Brunswick–Magdeburg railway](/source/Brunswick%E2%80%93Magdeburg_railway) at the Königslutter railway station, served by [Regionalbahn](/source/Regionalbahn) trains to Brunswick and Helmstedt, and is traversed by the [Bundesstraße](/source/Bundesstra%C3%9Fe) 1 federal highway. The [Bundesautobahn 2](/source/Bundesautobahn_2) runs about 6 km (3.7 mi) north of the town centre. Königslutter is a stop on the [German Timber-Frame Road](/source/German_Timber-Frame_Road) (*Deutsche Fachwerkstraße*) tourist route. The place was named after the nearby [karst spring](/source/Karst_spring) of the [Lutter](/source/Lutter_(Schunter)) (from [Middle High German](/source/Middle_High_German): *lauter*, "pure") stream in the Elm hills. A [water castle](/source/Water_castle) was erected around 1200 and in 1318 the surrounding settlement was documented as a [market town](/source/Market_town). Around 1400 the [Dukes of Brunswick](/source/Duchy_of_Brunswick-L%C3%BCneburg) granted the citizens of *Luttere* [town privileges](/source/German_town_law). From the late 14th century onwards, the place was called *Konnigesluttere*, referring to late Emperor Lothair III, [King of the Romans](/source/King_of_the_Romans). Located on the trade route from Brunswick to [Magdeburg](/source/Magdeburg) (the present-day Bundesstraße 1), [beer](/source/Beer) brewing and Elm [limestone](/source/Limestone) mining and cutting were its main industries in early modern times, while the monastery developed as a [pilgrimage](/source/Pilgrimage) destination. Not until 1924, the monastery complex and the adjacent settlement of *Oberlutter* were incorporated into the town.
