Stecyk III](/source/C._R._Stecyk_III)(a.k.a. Craig Stecyk), Greg Escalante, and [Eric Swenson](/source/Eric_Swenson)[1] to both help define and celebrate urban alternative and underground contemporary art. *Juxtapoz* is published by High Speed Productions, the same company that publishes *[Thrasher](/source/Thrasher_magazine)* skateboard magazine in [San Francisco, California](/source/San_Francisco,_California).[2] ## Scope *Juxtapoz* launched with the mission of connecting modern genres like [psychedelic](/source/Psychedelic_art) and hot rod art, [graffiti](/source/Graffiti), [street art](/source/Street_art), and [illustration](/source/Illustration), to the context of broader more historically recognized genres of art like [Pop](/source/Pop_art), [assemblage](/source/Assemblage_(art)), [old master painting](/source/Old_Master), and [conceptual art](/source/Conceptual_art). Although based in [San Francisco](/source/San_Francisco), *Juxtapoz* was founded upon the belief in the virtues of [Southern California](/source/Southern_California) [pop culture](/source/Popular_culture) and freedom from the conventions of the "established" [New York City](/source/New_York_City) art world.[3] [Ferus Gallery](/source/Ferus_Gallery), run by [Walter Hopps](/source/Walter_Hopps) and Irving Blum in the 1950s and 1960s, was the ultimate cultural touchstone for the magazine. *Juxtapoz* originally reflected Williams' own [Kustom Kulture](/source/Kustom_Kulture) sensibility – a combination of California ["Big Daddy" Ed Roth](/source/Ed_Roth)–style [pop surrealism](/source/Pop_surrealism) (identified by some as synonymous with [lowbrow art](/source/Lowbrow_(art_movement)) and others as its own genre[4]) and the serious [figurative](/source/Figurative_art) craftsmanship that is more likely to be found among [illustrators](/source/Illustrator) than [fine artists](/source/Fine_art) today. ## Growth *Juxtapoz* expanded its range in the early 2000s to cover other nascent styles and subgenres of [underground art](/source/Underground_art). Artists who have received coverage in *Juxtapoz* include [KAWS](/source/KAWS_(artist)), [Mark Ryden](/source/Mark_Ryden), [Barry McGee](/source/Barry_McGee), [Todd Schorr](/source/Todd_Schorr), [Tara McPherson](/source/Tara_McPherson), [Camille Rose Garcia](/source/Camille_Rose_Garcia), [Tim Biskup](/source/Tim_Biskup), [Anthony Ausgang](/source/Anthony_Ausgang), [Michael Pearce](/source/Michael_Pearce_(artist)) and [Tom Sachs](/source/Tom_Sachs_(artist)). As of 2009, *Juxtapoz* had the largest circulation of any [art magazine](/source/List_of_art_magazines) in the [United States](/source/United_States), more than established counterparts like *[Art News](/source/Art_News)*, *[Art in America](/source/Art_in_America)*, and *[Artforum](/source/Artforum)*.[5] In addition to printed subscriptions which offer alternative cover images to the newsstand version, *Juxtapoz* is also available as an online digital subscription.
