**Justin Chu Cary** is an American actor who stars on [Netflix](/source/Netflix)'s *[Black Summer](/source/Black_Summer_(TV_series))*.[3] The series is a prequel to *[Z Nation](/source/Z_Nation)*.[4]

## Early life and career

Justin Chu Cary grew up in [Oakland](/source/Oakland), California, the son of an [African-American](/source/African_Americans) father and a [Chinese-American](/source/Chinese_Americans) mother.[5][2] He went to the [University of California, Davis](/source/University_of_California,_Davis) where he competed for [track and field](/source/Track_and_field) and ran the 800M and 4x400M relays after being a 3 sport athlete at [Berkeley High School](/source/Berkeley_High_School_(California)).[1]

After working in theater in Los Angeles, as well as appearing in a few television series, he was cast on the Netflix series *Black Summer*. He is also a graphic designer and comic book artist.[3]
