# June Jackson

**Dame Temuranga Batley-Jackson** (; 24 August 1939 – 28 March 2022), known as **June Jackson**, was a New Zealand community worker and [public servant](/source/Civil_service).

## Birth and early years

Born Temuranga Batley to Barney and Huinga Batley, she grew up in [Mahoenui](/source/Mahoenui) in the [King Country](/source/King_Country) as a member of the [Ngāti Maniapoto](/source/Ng%C4%81ti_Maniapoto) tribe. She moved to [Wellington](/source/Wellington) in her late teens.[1] In 1971 she moved from [Porirua](/source/Porirua) to [Māngere](/source/M%C4%81ngere), [Auckland](/source/Auckland).[1]

## Career and awards

She was chief executive officer of the [Manukau](/source/Manukau) [Urban Māori](/source/Urban_M%C4%81ori) Authority from 1986 to 2009, and a member of the [New Zealand Parole Board](/source/New_Zealand_Parole_Board) from 1991 until her death.[2][3][4][5]

In 1990, Jackson received the [New Zealand 1990 Commemoration Medal](/source/New_Zealand_1990_Commemoration_Medal).[6] She was one of 544 recipients of the New Zealand Suffrage Centennial Medal in 1993.[7] In the [1996 Queen's Birthday Honours](/source/1996_Birthday_Honours_(New_Zealand)), she was appointed a [Companion of the Queen's Service Order](/source/Companion_of_the_Queen's_Service_Order) for public services.[8] In the [2010 Birthday Honours](/source/2010_Birthday_Honours_(New_Zealand)), Jackson was appointed [Dame Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit](/source/Dame_Companion_of_the_New_Zealand_Order_of_Merit), for services to [Māori](/source/M%C4%81ori_people).[9]

## Personal life and death

In 1959 Jackson married Robert "Bob" Jackson,[1] a son of [Everard Jackson](/source/Everard_Jackson).[10] Together they had three children, including the politician and broadcaster [Willie Jackson](/source/Willie_Jackson_(politician)).[11] Jackson died in [Taumarunui](/source/Taumarunui) on 28 March 2022 at the age of 82.[12][13] Her brother-in-law, [Moana Jackson](/source/Moana_Jackson), died three days later.[14]
