# June Card

**June Card** (born April 10, 1937) is an American [soprano](/source/Soprano) and [stage director](/source/Theatre_director) who had an active career in operas and concerts from 1959 through today. She began her career as a chorus girl on [Broadway](/source/Broadway_theatre) before moving into opera.

She established herself as an operatic soprano in Germany during the mid to late 1960s, ultimately forging a more-than-30-year-long partnership with the [Oper Frankfurt](/source/Oper_Frankfurt).[1] She also appeared as a guest artist with major [opera houses](/source/Opera_house) internationally and worked as a soloist in the [oratorio](/source/Oratorio) repertoire. In recent years she has been active as a stage director for opera productions in Germany, France and America, and worked as a voice teacher and [master class](/source/Master_class) instructor.

## Career

Born in [Dunkirk, New York](/source/Dunkirk,_New_York), Card studied singing with May Browner at the [Mannes College The New School for Music](/source/Mannes_College_The_New_School_for_Music). While a student she began her career performing as an ensemble member in the original Broadway production of [Rodgers and Hammerstein](/source/Rodgers_and_Hammerstein)'s *[The Sound of Music](/source/The_Sound_of_Music)* in 1959-1960, including the opening night.[2] She left that production to appear in the ensemble of the original cast of [Meredith Willson](/source/Meredith_Willson)'s *[The Unsinkable Molly Brown](/source/The_Unsinkable_Molly_Brown_(musical))* in 1960-1961. She then appeared in the ensemble of the original 1962 production of *[The Gay Life](/source/The_Gay_Life)* and was also the understudy for [Barbara Cook](/source/Barbara_Cook) in the role of Liesl.

### Opera

Card made her professional opera debut in 1963 as the Southern Girl in the world premiere of [Jerome Moross](/source/Jerome_Moross)' *[Gentlemen, Be Seated!](/source/Gentlemen,_Be_Seated!)* at the [New York City Opera](/source/New_York_City_Opera), then sang Valencienne in *Die lustige Witwe* (opposite [Beverly Sills](/source/Beverly_Sills)) with the company. She then moved to Germany where she was committed to [Theater Regensburg](/source/Theater_Regensburg) from 1965–1967, the [Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz](/source/Staatstheater_am_G%C3%A4rtnerplatz) from 1967–1980, and from 1969 up into the 2000s at the [Oper Frankfurt](/source/Oper_Frankfurt). She also appeared as a guest artist at the [Bavarian State Opera](/source/Bavarian_State_Opera), the [Berlin State Opera](/source/Berlin_State_Opera), the [Cologne Opera](/source/Cologne_Opera), the [Edinburgh Festival](/source/Edinburgh_Festival), the [Hamburg State Opera](/source/Hamburg_State_Opera), the [Holland Festival](/source/Holland_Festival), [La Fenice](/source/La_Fenice), [La Monnaie](/source/La_Monnaie), the [Liceu](/source/Liceu), the [Palais Garnier](/source/Palais_Garnier), the [Royal Opera](/source/Royal_Opera,_London), London, the [Salzburg Festival](/source/Salzburg_Festival), the [Staatsoper Stuttgart](/source/Staatsoper_Stuttgart), the [Teatro dell'Opera di Roma](/source/Teatro_dell'Opera_di_Roma), the [Teatro di San Carlo](/source/Teatro_di_San_Carlo), the [Vienna State Opera](/source/Vienna_State_Opera), and the [Zurich Opera](/source/Zurich_Opera). In 1985 she made her debut at the [Metropolitan Opera](/source/Metropolitan_Opera) as Marie in Berg's *[Wozzeck](/source/Wozzeck)*.[1][3]

During her career, Card appeared in several premieres, including [Mark Lothar](/source/Mark_Lothar)'s *[Der widerspenstige Heilige](/source/Der_widerspenstige_Heilige)* (1968), Hans Zender's *[Stephen Climax](/source/Stephen_Climax)* (1986), [John Cage](/source/John_Cage)'s [*Europera I* and *Europera II*](/source/Europeras) (1987), and [Volker David Kirchner](/source/Volker_David_Kirchner)'s *[Erinys](/source/Erinys_(opera))* (1990). In 1988 she sang in the United States premiere of *Europera I* and *Europera II* at the [Pepsico Summerfare](/source/Pepsico_Summerfare). She performed the part of the Duchess of Parma in Ferruccio Busoni's *[Doktor Faust](/source/Doktor_Faust)* at the Oper Frankfurt in 1980, staged by [Hans Neuenfels](/source/Hans_Neuenfels), with [Günther Reich](/source/G%C3%BCnther_Reich) in the title role and [William Cochran](/source/William_Cochran_(tenor)) as Mephistopheles.[5] In 1999 she sang there the Witch in [Engelbert Humperdinck](/source/Engelbert_Humperdinck_(composer))'s *[Hänsel und Gretel](/source/H%C3%A4nsel_und_Gretel_(opera))*, Herodias in *[Salome](/source/Salome_(opera))*, and the Mother in [Adriana Hölszky](/source/Adriana_H%C3%B6lszky)'s *Die Wände*.[6] In 2000 she took the part of the Leitmetzerin in *Der Rosenkavalier*.[7] In 2001 she appeared as The Old Burya in *Jenůfa* at the [Salzburg Festival](/source/Salzburg_Festival), conducted by John Eliot Gardiner.[8] In 2005 she sang the role also in Frankfurt.[9]

In 2022, Opera Depot published a "live" performance from Frankfurt on Compact Discs of Card as Chrysothemis in *Elektra*, conducted by [Klauspeter Seibel](/source/Klauspeter_Seibel).

### Concert

In 1980 Card premiered [Wilhelm Killmayer](/source/Wilhelm_Killmayer)'s *Französisches Liederbuch* at the [Schwetzingen Festival](/source/Schwetzingen_Festival) with baritone [Philippe Huttenlocher](/source/Philippe_Huttenlocher) and the Südwestdeutsches Kammerorchester, conducted by [Paul Angerer](/source/Paul_Angerer).[10]

## Awards

She was awarded the title [Kammersängerin](/source/Kammers%C3%A4nger) ("Chamber singer") by both Frankfurt and Munich.[1]
