# July 1982 lunar eclipse

A total [lunar eclipse](/source/Lunar_eclipse) occurred at the Moon's [descending node](/source/Lunar_node) of orbit on Tuesday, July 6, 1982,[1][2] with an umbral [magnitude](/source/Magnitude_of_eclipse) of 1.7180. It was a [central lunar eclipse](/source/List_of_central_lunar_eclipses), in which part of the [Moon](/source/Moon) passed through the [center](/source/Antisolar_point) of the [Earth's shadow](/source/Earth's_shadow). A lunar eclipse occurs when the [Moon](/source/Moon) moves into the [Earth's shadow](/source/Earth's_shadow), causing the Moon to be darkened. A total lunar eclipse occurs when the Moon's near side entirely passes into the Earth's umbral shadow. Unlike a [solar eclipse](/source/Solar_eclipse), which can only be viewed from a relatively small area of the world, a lunar eclipse may be viewed from anywhere on the [night](/source/Night) side of Earth. A total lunar eclipse can last up to nearly two hours, while a total solar eclipse lasts only a few minutes at any given place, because the Moon's [shadow](/source/Umbra,_penumbra_and_antumbra) is smaller. Occurring about 1.2 days after [apogee](/source/Apsis) (on July 5, 1982, at 2:30 UTC), the Moon's apparent diameter was smaller.[3] It was the longest total lunar eclipse since [the August 1859 eclipse](/source/August_1859_lunar_eclipse).[4]: 145

The eclipse was completely visible over western and central [North America](/source/North_America), western [South America](/source/South_America), and [Antarctica](/source/Antarctica), seen rising over northwestern North America, [Australia](/source/Australia), and the western [Pacific Ocean](/source/Pacific_Ocean) and setting over northeastern North America, eastern South America, and [west](/source/West_Africa) and [southern Africa](/source/Southern_Africa).[5]
