'''''Jultagi''''' ({{Korean|hangul=줄타기}}) or '''''eoreum''''' ({{Korean|hangul=어름|labels=no}}) is traditional [Korea](/source/Korea)n performance of [tightrope-walking](/source/tightrope-walking). It is included into South Korea's [Important Intangible Cultural Properties](/source/Important_Intangible_Cultural_Properties_of_Korea) number 58.

==Origin==
There is no evidence when this [acrobatic performance](/source/acrobatic_performance) originated. Some scholars presumed it appeared during [Silla](/source/Silla) and [Goryeo](/source/Goryeo) era. It became more famous in [Joseon dynasty](/source/Joseon_dynasty) era and still exists to this day.

It is different from the tightrope-walking styles of other countries, because it is usually accompanied by [music plays](/source/Korean_traditional_music) by telling a story to entertain viewers.<ref>{{Cite web|url=http://www.heritage.go.kr/heri/cul/culSelectDetail.do?pageNo=5_2_1_0&culPageNo=1&searchCondition=%EC%A4%84%ED%83%80%EA%B8%B0&region=1&s_kdcd=00&s_ctcd=00&ccbaCncl=2&ccbaKdcd=17&ccbaAsno=00580000&ccbaCtcd=31&ccbaCpno=1273100580000&ccbaPcd1=99&returnUrl=%2Fheri%2Fcul%2FculSelectViewList.do|title=Jultagi|last=|first=|date=April 16, 2018|publisher=[Cultural Heritage Administration](/source/Cultural_Heritage_Administration)|archive-url=|archive-date=|access-date=}}</ref> Jultagi is held on [public holidays in South Korea](/source/public_holidays_in_South_Korea) like [Daeboreum](/source/Daeboreum), [Dano](/source/Dano_festival) and [Chuseok](/source/Chuseok) holidays. The [Korean folk village](/source/Korean_folk_village) in Seoul also presents this play to entertain tourists. It was also performed in events held in the royal palace, banquets of high-ranking government officers or village festivals. The tightrope walking performance is composed of a rope player, a clown and musical instrument players.

An example of these plays can be seen in the movie ''[King and the Clown](/source/King_and_the_Clown)''.<ref>{{cite news|url=http://twitchfilm.net/archives/006941.html|publisher=twitchfilm|title=<nowiki>[KING AND THE CLOWN SPECIAL] 왕의 남자 (The King and The Clown) [Part 3]</nowiki>|date=October 4, 2007}}</ref>

==Technique==

There are more than 40 kinds of Jultagi techniques including a walking on a tight rope as the basic motion, a reversed walking on it, leaping with one foot on it, sitting and lying on it, and sometimes pretending to fall down. Another elaborate tightrope walking trick is jumping up after kneeling on the tightrope with one knee and then landing on the rope in a cross-legged sitting position. Some expert tightrope walkers can jump forward while standing on the rope without falling.<ref>{{cite news|url=http://www.arirang.co.kr/Tv2/ALegacy_Whatson.asp?PROG_CODE=TVCR0301&MENU_CODE=100753&sys_lang=Eng|publisher=[Arirang TV](/source/Arirang_TV)|title=Jultagi, A Korean Tightrope Performance|date=October 22, 2007|archive-date=31 January 2021|access-date=22 October 2007|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20210131163923/http://www.arirang.co.kr/Tv2/ALegacy_Whatson.asp?PROG_CODE=TVCR0301&MENU_CODE=100753&sys_lang=Eng|url-status=dead}}</ref>
