The strait is located about {{convert|10|km}} west of the town of [Molde](/source/Molde_(town)) in [Møre og Romsdal](/source/M%C3%B8re_og_Romsdal) county, [Norway](/source/Norway).  The strait runs through [Aukra Municipality](/source/Aukra_Municipality), [Hustadvika Municipality](/source/Hustadvika_Municipality), and [Molde Municipality](/source/Molde_Municipality). The strait flows north–south from the village of [Bud](/source/Bud%2C_Norway) (in Hustadvika Municipality) to Julneset (in Molde Municipality). It flows between the [Romsdal Peninsula](/source/Romsdal_Peninsula) (on the east side) and the islands of [Otrøya](/source/Otr%C3%B8ya) and [Gossa](/source/Gossa_(island)) (on the west side). The [strait](/source/strait) is up to {{convert|500|m}} deep and it is {{convert|2|to|3|km}} wide. It has a significant [tidal](/source/tide) current and is exposed to strong northerly winds. Julsundet was heavily fortified by the [German](/source/Germans)s during [World War II](/source/World_War_II).

The mainland part of [Aukra Municipality](/source/Aukra_Municipality) is also often referred to as ''Julsundet''.
