From 1836 to 1839, he studied [theology](/source/theology) and [philology](/source/philology) at the [University of Breslau](/source/University_of_Breslau), where he attended lectures on [German language](/source/German_language) and [literature](/source/German_literature) given by [Hoffmann von Fallersleben](/source/Hoffmann_von_Fallersleben). He then served as a private tutor under the employ of [Graf von Wylich und Lottum](/source/Carl_Friedrich_Heinrich%2C_Graf_von_Wylich_und_Lottum). Afterwards, he travelled to the [Berlin](/source/University_of_Berlin), where he studied under [Karl Lachmann](/source/Karl_Lachmann) and the [Brothers Grimm](/source/Brothers_Grimm). In 1853, he qualified as a lecturer at Halle with the thesis, ''Desquistionis grammaticae de alphabetic gothici ulphilani origine atque indoles particular''. In 1856, he became an associate professor, and three years later, transferred to [Königsberg](/source/University_of_K%C3%B6nigsberg) as chair of [German philology](/source/German_philology) and chief librarian. In 1863, he returned as a professor to Halle, where he gave classes in [German grammar](/source/German_grammar), metrics and [mythology](/source/German_mythology).<ref name=DB/><ref name=HA/>
