**Juan Garrido Canales** (born 22 November 1966 in [Ossa de Montiel](/source/Ossa_de_Montiel), [Albacete](/source/Province_of_Albacete), [Castilla–La Mancha](/source/Castilla%E2%80%93La_Mancha)) is a Spanish former professional [football](/source/Association_football) [goalkeeper](/source/Goalkeeper_(association_football))[1] and current goalkeeping coach for [UCAM Murcia](/source/UCAM_Murcia_CF).

## Playing career

Canales's family moved to [Elda](/source/Elda) in the [province of Alicante](/source/Province_of_Alicante) when he was a child, and he began his career in the youth teams of local side [Eldense](/source/CD_Eldense). He joined [Castilla](/source/Real_Madrid_Castilla), the reserve side of giants [Real Madrid](/source/Real_Madrid_CF), in 1983, and made his [La Liga](/source/La_Liga) debut for the first team aged just seventeen the following year due to a players' strike.[2] What would prove to be his only appearance for the Real first team came on 9 September, in a 1–1 draw with [Sporting de Gijón](/source/Sporting_de_Gij%C3%B3n) at [El Molinón](/source/El_Molin%C3%B3n).[3]

Canales spent the [1985–86 season](/source/1985%E2%80%9386_Tercera_Divisi%C3%B3n) with the C team, [Real Madrid Aficionados](/source/Real_Madrid_C), in the [Tercera División](/source/Tercera_Divisi%C3%B3n), making 33 appearances. For the next three years, he continued to play with Castilla, being first choice goalkeeper in the latter two of these.[1] However, by 1989, he found himself well down the pecking order for a place with the first team, behind established first choice [Paco Buyo](/source/Francisco_Buyo), the experienced [Agustín](/source/Agust%C3%ADn_(footballer)), and the emerging youngster [Santiago Cañizares](/source/Santiago_Ca%C3%B1izares).[2] He therefore decided to join [Segunda División](/source/Segunda_Divisi%C3%B3n) side [Xerez](/source/Xerez_CD) that summer, but only played twice [that season](/source/1989%E2%80%9390_Segunda_Divisi%C3%B3n). He moved again the following year, signing for [Logroñés](/source/CD_Logro%C3%B1%C3%A9s) in [the top flight](/source/La_Liga).[1] He was immediately the first choice of coach [David Vidal](/source/David_Vidal),[2] and he played 30 La Liga matches during the [1990–91 season](/source/1990%E2%80%9391_La_Liga).[1]

His fine form earned him a move to the ambitious and newly promoted [Deportivo La Coruña](/source/Deportivo_de_La_Coru%C3%B1a) in the summer of 1991.[1] He was intended to be *Depor'*s first choice, but an unfortunate injury that summer prompted the signing of [Francisco Liaño](/source/Francisco_Lia%C3%B1o) from [Sestao Sport](/source/Sestao_Sport_Club), who would go on to be first choice for the majority of the next five years. He played just eleven games in [his first season](/source/1991%E2%80%9392_La_Liga), and none at all in the following two thanks to an injury sustained in an incident with a truck. [1994–95](/source/1994%E2%80%9395_La_Liga) was much better, as he made 12 appearances,[2] and when [John Toshack](/source/John_Toshack) was appointed as manager to replace the retiring [Arsenio Iglesias](/source/Arsenio_Iglesias) in the summer of 1995, he declared that Canales would be his number one goalkeeper for the [ensuing season](/source/1995%E2%80%9396_La_Liga). However, he reverted to Liaño after just seven matches.[1]

In the summer of 1996, Deportivo signed Czech keeper [Petr Kouba](/source/Petr_Kouba) from [Sparta Prague](/source/AC_Sparta_Prague) and Cameroonian [Jacques Songo'o](/source/Jacques_Songo'o) from [Metz](/source/FC_Metz), and the arrival of these two internationals heralded the end of Canales's career at the club.[2] He joined second tier side [Las Palmas](/source/UD_Las_Palmas) in December,[4] and was first choice until the end of [that season](/source/1996%E2%80%9397_Segunda_Divisi%C3%B3n). However, the arrival of Yugoslavian [Željko Cicović](/source/%C5%BDeljko_Cicovi%C4%87) from [Rad](/source/FK_Rad) in 1997 saw him relegated to the bench once more,[2] and he played just once over the following two seasons before leaving the club in 1999. He stayed in [the same city](/source/Las_Palmas) for one more year, signing for [Universidad Las Palmas](/source/Universidad_de_Las_Palmas_CF) for the [1999–2000 Segunda División B](/source/1999%E2%80%932000_Segunda_Divisi%C3%B3n_B) season, although he didn't play any matches.[1] He then returned to his roots by rejoining Eldense, with whom he spent four years in the Tercera División before retiring in 2004 at the age of 37.[2]

## Coaching career

After his retirement, Canales stayed on at [Eldense](/source/CD_Eldense) as goalkeeping coach. He later coached at two [Alicante](/source/Alicante) based clubs, [Hércules](/source/H%C3%A9rcules_CF) and [Alicante CF](/source/Alicante_CF), before returning to [Real Madrid](/source/Real_Madrid_CF) in 2008 as goalkeeping coach to the [Castilla](/source/Real_Madrid_Castilla) and [Juvenil A](/source/Real_Madrid_CF_(youth)) sides.[5] In June 2013, newly appointed manager [Carlo Ancelotti](/source/Carlo_Ancelotti) promoted him to the same duties with the first team, making him coach to legendary Real and [Spain international](/source/Spain_national_football_team) keeper [Iker Casillas](/source/Iker_Casillas). Since 2016, he has been the goalkeeping coach of [UCAM Murcia](/source/UCAM_Murcia_CF).
