Born in [Langreo](/source/Langreo), [Asturias](/source/Asturias), Josu emerged through [FC Barcelona](/source/FC_Barcelona)'s youth system at [La Masia](/source/La_Masia), where he played alongside future [Spanish](/source/Spain_national_football_team) international [Gerard Deulofeu](/source/Gerard_Deulofeu).
