# Joshua Homer

**Joshua Attwood Reynolds Homer** (August 1, 1827 – September 20, 1886) was a Canadian [Member of Parliament](/source/Member_of_Parliament_(Canada)) from [British Columbia](/source/British_Columbia).[1]

The son of Joseph Homer,[2] he was born in [Barrington, Nova Scotia](/source/Barrington,_Nova_Scotia_(community))[1] and educated there,[2] but later moved to the [British Columbia Colony](/source/Colony_of_British_Columbia_(1858%E2%80%9366)), settling in [New Westminster](/source/New_Westminster,_British_Columbia) in 1858, and becoming a merchant. In 1860, he married Sophie Wilson. In 1863, he was elected to the first [Colonial Assembly of British Columbia](/source/Colonial_Assembly_of_British_Columbia). Homer was reelected in 1864.[2] Homer eventually became [High Sheriff](/source/High_Sheriff) for the colony. In that capacity, he declared the [union](/source/Colony_of_British_Columbia_(1866%E2%80%9371)) with [Vancouver Island](/source/Colony_of_Vancouver_Island) on behalf of [Governor Frederick Seymour](/source/Frederick_Seymour) in 1866.[3]

Homer was a [Liberal-Conservative](/source/Liberal-Conservative_Party) candidate in [New Westminster](/source/New_Westminster_(federal_electoral_district)) during the [1874 federal election](/source/1874_Canadian_federal_election) but lost to Liberal James Cunningham. Homer was later elected [Member of Parliament](/source/Member_of_Parliament_(Canada)) in an 1882 [by-election](/source/By-election) when incumbent [Thomas Robert McInnes](/source/Thomas_Robert_McInnes) resigned to accept an appointment in the [Senate](/source/Senate_of_Canada). His election was confirmed in the [general election](/source/1882_Canadian_federal_election) only six months later. Homer died in office[1] in New Westminster before he could complete the term.[2]
