Born in [New York City](/source/New_Jersey), Sternfeld studied English literature at [Washington University in St. Louis](/source/Washington_University_in_St._Louis). He graduated from [New York University Tisch School of the Arts](/source/New_York_University_Tisch_School_of_the_Arts) in 1999. In 1999, Sternfeld began work as an assistant editor at Steeplechase Films, where he worked on [Ric Burns](/source/Ric_Burns)' 2000 [Emmy](/source/Emmy) Award-nominated series, [New York: A Documentary Film](/source/New_York%3A_A_Documentary_Film) (2000).
In 2005 he wrote and directed his first feature film, ''[Winter Solstice](/source/Winter_Solstice_(film))''. The story follows the efforts of a man who struggles to relate to his sons in the years following the accidental death of his wife. The film was distributed by [Paramount Classics](/source/Paramount_Classics).
In 2009 Sternfeld wrote and directed the police drama ''[Meskada](/source/Meskada)'' (2010).
He wrote and directed the unreleased thriller, [Amy Makes Three](/source/Amy_Makes_Three) which stars [Torrey DeVitto](/source/Torrey_DeVitto) and [Mike Doyle (actor)](/source/Mike_Doyle_(actor)).
