The son of [Joseph Franz Weigl](/source/Joseph_Franz_Weigl) (1740–1820), the principal [cellist](/source/cellist) in the [orchestra](/source/orchestra) of the [Esterházy](/source/House_of_Esterh%C3%A1zy) family, he studied music under [Johann Georg Albrechtsberger](/source/Johann_Georg_Albrechtsberger), [Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart](/source/Wolfgang_Amadeus_Mozart) and [Antonio Salieri](/source/Antonio_Salieri). He became [Kapellmeister](/source/Kapellmeister) at the [court theatre](/source/court_theatre) in [Vienna](/source/Vienna) in 1792, and from 1827 to 1838, was vice-Kapellmeister of the court. Weigl composed a number of [opera](/source/opera)s, both Italian and German and in various genres, although most of his late works are pieces of sacred music. His best known work was the opera ''[Die Schweizerfamilie](/source/Die_Schweizerfamilie)'' (1809). He also set [Emanuel Schikaneder](/source/Emanuel_Schikaneder)'s libretto ''[Vestas Feuer](/source/Vestas_Feuer)'' (1805), after his close friend [Ludwig van Beethoven](/source/Ludwig_van_Beethoven) had composed a single scene and then abandoned it. Weigl died in Vienna in 1846.
