# Joseph Rowbotham

**Joseph Rowbotham** (8 July 1831 – 22 December 1899) was an English [cricketer](/source/Cricket), who played for [Sheffield Cricket Club](/source/Sheffield_Cricket_Club) (*aka* Yorkshire) 1854–62; and for [Yorkshire County Cricket Club](/source/Yorkshire_County_Cricket_Club) 1863–76.[1] In addition, he represented [Marylebone Cricket Club](/source/Marylebone_Cricket_Club) (MCC) in 1856; [the North](/source/North_of_England_cricket_team) 1857–75; [the All England Eleven](/source/All_England_Eleven) (AEE) 1862–68; [the Players](/source/Gentlemen_v_Players) 1864–69; [an England Eleven](/source/Rest_of_England_cricket_teams) in 1864; the combined Cambridgeshire and Yorkshire team in 1864; the combined Nottinghamshire and Yorkshire team in 1872; the [United North of England Eleven](/source/United_North_of_England_Eleven) (UNEE) 1870–75; and [the Players of the North](/source/Players_of_the_North_cricket_team) 1874–76. He played in minor and odds matches in 1865 on tour with the AEE.

Rowbotham was born in [Highfield, Sheffield](/source/Highfield,_Sheffield); died in [Morecambe](/source/Morecambe). He was Yorkshire's [captain](/source/Captain_(cricket)) in 1873 and 1875. In 141 matches, he scored 3,694 runs at 15.92, with three [centuries](/source/Century_(cricket)) and a highest score of 113 against [Surrey](/source/Surrey_County_Cricket_Club). An occasional [wicketkeeper](/source/Wicketkeeper), he held seventy [catches](/source/Caught) and completed five [stumpings](/source/Stumping). He also took three [wickets](/source/Wicket) for 37 against [Gloucestershire](/source/Gloucestershire_County_Cricket_Club) in his only [bowling](/source/Bowling_(cricket)) spell.

He [umpired](/source/Umpire_(cricket)) in one [Test match](/source/Test_cricket): [England](/source/England_cricket_team) versus [Australia](/source/Australia_cricket_team) at [Manchester](/source/Manchester) from 10 to 12 July 1884.
