Find sources: "Joseph McMillan Johnson" – news · newspapers · books · scholar · JSTOR (April 2024) **Joseph McMillan Johnson** (September 15, 1912 – April 17, 1990) was a leading [Hollywood](/source/Cinema_of_the_United_States) [art director](/source/Art_director) born in [Los Angeles](/source/Los_Angeles). He was graduated from [USC](/source/University_of_Southern_California) with a degree in [architecture](/source/Architecture) before attending [Art Center College of Design](/source/Art_Center_College_of_Design) in [Pasadena](/source/Pasadena%2C_California). He was working for well-known architect [Kem Weber](/source/Kem_Weber) when he was hired by [David O. Selznick](/source/David_O._Selznick) in 1938. He worked as a sketch artist for designs on *[Gone with the Wind](/source/Gone_with_the_Wind_(film))* in 1939, and was heavily involved with the creation of the [special effects](/source/Special_effects) for *[The Wizard of Oz](/source/The_Wizard_of_Oz_(1939_film))* that same year. He worked on most of Selznick's major productions including *[Duel in the Sun](/source/Duel_in_the_Sun_(film))* (1946), *[The Paradine Case](/source/The_Paradine_Case)* (1947) and *[Portrait of Jennie](/source/Portrait_of_Jennie)* (1948), for which he won an [Oscar](/source/Academy_Awards) for the [visual effects](/source/Visual_effects).[1] A frequent collaborator with [Alfred Hitchcock](/source/Alfred_Hitchcock), (*[Rear Window](/source/Rear_Window)* in 1954 was followed by *[To Catch a Thief](/source/To_Catch_a_Thief_(film))* in 1955 which earned him another [Academy Award](/source/Academy_Awards) nomination), Johnson was forced to take a break from Hollywood during the [McCarthy](/source/McCarthyism) witch hunts. He returned to his first career of architecture for a year, and worked with many notable architects in the LA area, many of whom having been his classmates at USC. When the McCarthy hysteria of Communism settled down, Johnson returned to Hollywood, earning Oscar nominations for his art direction on *[The Facts of Life](/source/The_Facts_of_Life_(film))* in 1960 and the expensive [remake](/source/Remake) of *[Mutiny on the Bounty](/source/Mutiny_on_the_Bounty_(1962_film))* in 1962, and for visual effects on [George Stevens](/source/George_Stevens)'s religious epic *[The Greatest Story Ever Told](/source/The_Greatest_Story_Ever_Told)* (1965) and the [John Sturges](/source/John_Sturges) [thriller](/source/Thriller_(genre)) *[Ice Station Zebra](/source/Ice_Station_Zebra_(film))* in 1968.
