After beginning his training in [Marseille](/source/Marseille) in 1853 he moved to Paris in 1856, studying at the [École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts](/source/%C3%89cole_nationale_sup%C3%A9rieure_des_Beaux-Arts) under [Léon Cogniet](/source/L%C3%A9on_Cogniet) and [Tony Robert-Fleury](/source/Tony_Robert-Fleury).
