# Joseph Dines

**Joseph Frank Dines** (12 April 1886 – 27 September 1918) was an English amateur [footballer](/source/Association_football) who competed in the [1912 Summer Olympics](/source/1912_Summer_Olympics).[1]

He represented [Great Britain](/source/Great_Britain_and_Northern_Ireland_Olympic_football_team) as part of the [England national amateur football team](/source/England_national_amateur_football_team), which won the gold medal in the football tournament.[2] He played all three matches.

Dines was born in [King's Lynn](/source/King's_Lynn), [Norfolk](/source/Norfolk), where he worked as a school teacher alongside playing local football in the town.[3] He is listed in the 1901 census as a National Schools' Monitor.[4] Dines later moved to the [Ilford](/source/Ilford)/[South Woodford](/source/South_Woodford) area, playing for local [non-league](/source/Non-League_football) club [Ilford](/source/Ilford_F.C.). Dines resisted attempts to become a professional, however played for [Liverpool](/source/Liverpool_F.C.), [Walthamstow Avenue](/source/Walthamstow_Avenue_F.C.) and [Millwall](/source/Millwall_F.C.), as well as featuring for [Norwich City](/source/Norwich_City_F.C.) and [Woolwich Arsenal](/source/Arsenal_F.C.)'s reserves during his time at [Lynn Town](/source/King's_Lynn_F.C.).[5] During the [First World War](/source/World_War_I), he served in the [Army Ordnance Corps](/source/Royal_Army_Ordnance_Corps), the [Middlesex Regiment](/source/Middlesex_Regiment), the [Machine Gun Corps](/source/Machine_Gun_Corps) and latterly as a second-lieutenant in the [King's Liverpool Regiment](/source/King's_Liverpool_Regiment).[3] He was killed, aged 31, in [Pas-de-Calais](/source/Pas-de-Calais) on the [Western Front](/source/Western_Front_(World_War_I)), He is buried in Harvincourt.[6]
