Joseph Coiny was born on September 3, 1795, in Paris.<ref>{{cite web|language=en|url=https://www.oxfordartonline.com/benezit/search?siteToSearch=benezit&q=%22Coiny%2C+Joseph+French%22&searchBtn=Search&isQuickSearch=true|title=Coiny, Joseph|website=oxfordartonline.com}}</ref> He was the son of engraver [Jacques Joseph Coiny](/source/Jacques_Joseph_Coiny), with whom he began his studies, before becoming a pupil of [François-Louis Gounod](/source/Fran%C3%A7ois-Louis_Gounod) and Bervic. 

He won the Prix de Rome in engraving in 1816. 

Among his works are The Creation of Eve, based on [Michelangelo](/source/Michelangelo), and numerous portraits. 

Joseph Coiny died on August 1, 1829, in his hometown.
