Rear Admiral **Joseph Bullock Coghlan** (9 December 1844 – 5 December 1908) was an officer in the [United States Navy](/source/United_States_Navy) during the [American Civil War](/source/American_Civil_War) and the [Spanish–American War](/source/Spanish%E2%80%93American_War).

## Biography

Born at [Frankfort, Kentucky](/source/Frankfort%2C_Kentucky), to Cornelius and Lavinia Coghlan,[1] and raised in Illinois,[2] Coghlan graduated from the [Naval Academy](/source/United_States_Naval_Academy) in 1863. He served in the [sloop-of-war](/source/Sloop-of-war) [*Sacramento*](/source/USS_Sacramento_(1862)) during the Civil War. As commander of the [screw sloop](/source/Screw_sloop) [*Adams*](/source/USS_Adams_(1874)), Coghlan was military commander of the [Department of Alaska](/source/Department_of_Alaska) from 15 September 1883 to 13 September 1884. During the Spanish–American War he led the expedition which captured the batteries at [Cavite](/source/Cavite) (2 May 1898) and at [Isla Grande](/source/Isla_Grande), [Subic Bay](/source/Subic_Bay) (7 July) and commanded the [protected cruiser](/source/Protected_cruiser) [*Raleigh*](/source/USS_Raleigh_(C-8)) during the [Battle of Manila Bay](/source/Battle_of_Manila_Bay) on 1 May 1898.

Coghlan was promoted to rear admiral on 11 April 1902.[3] He commanded American forces at [Colón, Panama](/source/Col%C3%B3n%2C_Panama) during the [separation of Panama from Colombia](/source/Separation_of_Panama_from_Colombia) in 1903.[4] Coghlan served as commandant of the [New York Navy Yard](/source/Brooklyn_Navy_Yard) from 1 October 1904 to 30 May 1907.[2]

He was a Companion of the [Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States](/source/Military_Order_of_the_Loyal_Legion_of_the_United_States) and the [Military Order of Foreign Wars](/source/Military_Order_of_Foreign_Wars).

After retirement, Coghlan served as president of the Debenture Corporation on Wall Street in New York City.[2] On 31 October 1908, he served as Grand Marshal of a parade of 90,000 businessmen in support of [Republican candidates](/source/1908_United_States_presidential_election#General_election) [William Howard Taft](/source/William_Howard_Taft) and [James S. Sherman](/source/James_S._Sherman).[5] Less than two months later, Coghlan died in the [Sutton Manor](/source/Sutton_Manor_(New_Rochelle)) district of [New Rochelle, New York](/source/New_Rochelle%2C_New_York), and was buried at [Arlington National Cemetery](/source/Arlington_National_Cemetery).[2][3][6][7]
