**Joseph Anthony Gray** (February 25, 1884 – May 8, 1966) was a [Democratic](/source/Democratic_Party_(United_States)) member of the [United States House of Representatives](/source/United_States_House_of_Representatives) from [Pennsylvania](/source/Pennsylvania).

## Biography

Joseph Gray was born in [Susquehanna Township, Cambria County, Pennsylvania](/source/Susquehanna_Township%2C_Cambria_County%2C_Pennsylvania). He graduated from [Eastman College](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Eastman_College&action=edit&redlink=1) at [Poughkeepsie, New York](/source/Poughkeepsie_(city)%2C_New_York), in 1905. He served as a private in Company H, [Fifth Infantry](/source/5th_Infantry_Division_(United_States)), [United States Army](/source/United_States_Army), from 1900 to 1902 and in the [United States Army Signal Corps](/source/United_States_Army_Signal_Corps) in 1902 and 1903. After his service in the military, he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1910 and commenced practice in [Ebensburg, Pennsylvania](/source/Ebensburg%2C_Pennsylvania). He was a member of the [Pennsylvania State House of Representatives](/source/Pennsylvania_State_House_of_Representatives) in 1913 and 1914. He served as president of the board of health from 1916 to 1920, and became a motion-picture exhibitor at [Spangler, Pennsylvania](/source/Spangler%2C_Pennsylvania), in 1920. He was school director of Spangler from 1930 to 1934 and a councilman from 1939 to 1943.

Gray was elected as a Democrat to the [74th](/source/74th_United_States_Congress) and [75th](/source/75th_United_States_Congress) Congresses. He was an unsuccessful candidate for re-election in [1938](/source/United_States_House_election%2C_1938) and [1940](/source/United_States_House_election%2C_1940). He resumed the practice of law and also published *The Conservative* weekly newspaper. He died in Spangler, Pennsylvania, and is buried in Holy Cross Cemetery.
