***[Ratu](/source/Ratu)*** **Josefa Nalumuialevu Dimuri** is a [Fijian](/source/Fiji) [chief](/source/Ratu) and politician,[1] who served as a [Senator](/source/Senate_of_Fiji)[2] from 2001 to 2006, when he was elected to the [House of Representatives](/source/House_of_Representatives_of_Fiji). Following the election, he was appointed [Minister of State for Agriculture](/source/Minister_of_State_for_Agriculture_(Fiji)), [Alternative Livelihood](/source/Minister_of_State_for_Alternative_Livelihood_(Fiji)), and [Outer Island Development](/source/Minister_of_State_for_Outer_Island_Development_(Fiji)).

## Political career

A former Fiji Times journalist, Dimuri was appointed Minister of Information by the Rabuka government in 1993.[3] He contested the [Macuata](/source/Macuata_(Fijian_Communal_Constituency,_Fiji)) [Fijian](/source/Fijians) [Communal Constituency](/source/Communal_constituencies) on behalf of then-[Prime Minister](/source/Prime_Minister_of_Fiji) [Sitiveni Rabuka](/source/Sitiveni_Rabuka)'s political party, the *[Soqosoqo ni Vakavulewa ni Taukei](/source/Soqosoqo_ni_Vakavulewa_ni_Taukei)* (SVT), but was defeated by the [Christian Democratic Alliance](/source/Christian_Democratic_Alliance_(Fiji)) candidate, [Poseci Bune](/source/Poseci_Bune). In 2001, he [contested](/source/2001_Fijian_general_election) the [Bua-Macuata West](/source/Bua_Macuata_West_(Open_Constituency,_Fiji)) [Open Constituency](/source/Open_constituencies), this time as a candidate of the newly formed [Conservative Alliance](/source/Conservative_Alliance-Matanitu_Vanua) (CAMV), and lost again. The [Macuata](/source/Macuata_Province) [Provincial Council](/source/Local_government_in_Fiji), however, chose Dimuri to represent the province in the Senate. According to the non-defunct [1997 Constitution](/source/1997_Constitution_of_Fiji), fourteen Senators were chosen by the [Great Council of Chiefs](/source/Great_Council_of_Chiefs), but in practice the Great Council chose to delegate this prerogative to Fiji's fourteen [provincial councils](/source/Local_government_in_Fiji), each of which chose one Senator.

In April 2005 he was sentenced to eight months imprisonment over his role in the [Sukanaivalu Barracks mutiny](/source/2000_Fijian_mutinies#The_Sukunaivalu_Barracks_mutiny_(7_July_2000)).[4] He was released to serve his sentence extramurally after only 11 days,[1] and subsequently allowed to return to his seat in parliament.[5]

He was elected in an open seat at the [2006 election](/source/2006_Fijian_general_election).[6] He lost his seat following the [2006 Fijian coup d'état](/source/2006_Fijian_coup_d'%C3%A9tat).
