Austrian lichenologist and mycologist

Josef Hafellner Born 1951 (age 74–75) Scientific career Fields Lichenology, mycology Institutions Karl-Franzens-Universität Author abbrev. (botany) Hafellner [1]

**Josef Hafellner** (1951– ) is an Austrian [mycologist](/source/Mycologist) and [lichenologist](/source/Lichenologist). He was awarded the [Acharius Medal](/source/Acharius_Medal) in 2016 for his lifetime contributions to lichenology.[2] Before his retirement, he was a professor at the [Karl-Franzens-Universität](/source/Karl-Franzens-Universit%C3%A4t) in [Graz](/source/Graz). Hafellner started developing an interest in [lichens](/source/Lichen) while he was a student at this institution, studying under [Josef Poelt](/source/Josef_Poelt). He earned a [master's degree](/source/Master's_degree) in 1975 and a [PhD](/source/PhD) in 1978, defending a [doctoral thesis](/source/Doctoral_thesis) about the genus *[Karschia](/source/Karschia)*. In 2003, Hafellner received his [habilitation](/source/Habilitation). By this time, he had studied with French lichenologist [André Bellemère](/source/Andr%C3%A9_Bellem%C3%A8re) (1927–2014) at [Saint-Cloud](/source/Saint-Cloud), where he learned techniques of [transmission electron microscopy](/source/Transmission_electron_microscopy) and how their application in studying [asci](/source/Ascus) could be used in lichen [systematics](/source/Systematics).[3] His 1984 work *Studien in Richtung einer natürlicheren Gliederung der Sammelfamilien Lecanoraceae und Lecideaceae* has been described as "probably the single most influential publication in [lichen systematics](/source/Lichen_systematics) in the latter half of the 20th century".[4]

His research interests include the [classification](/source/Classification_(biology)) and [taxonomy](/source/Taxonomy_(biology)) of [lichens](/source/Lichen) and [lichenicolous fungi](/source/Lichenicolous_fungi) and lichen [floristics](/source/Floristics) of the eastern [European Alps](/source/European_Alps). He has made about 100,000 [scientific collections](/source/Scientific_collection) of specimens, including about 8000 lichenicolous fungi. Hafellner has introduced more than 600 scientific names to science, and as of 2016, authored or co-authored 289 [scientific publications](/source/Scientific_publication).[5] In 2007 he started to edit and distribute the [exsiccata](/source/Exsiccata) *Lichenicolous Biota*.[6]
