**Johan Robert "Joop" Carp** (30 January 1897 in [Tjomal](/source/Pemalang_Regency), [Dutch East Indies](/source/Dutch_East_Indies) – 25 March 1962 in [Johannesburg](/source/Johannesburg)) was a [sailor](/source/Sailing_(sport)) from the [Netherlands](/source/Netherlands), who represented his native country at the [1920 Summer Olympics](/source/Sailing_at_the_1920_Summer_Olympics_%E2%80%93_6.5_Metre) in [Ostend](/source/Ostend), [Belgium](/source/Belgium). With crew [Bernard Carp](/source/Bernard_Carp) and [Petrus Wernink](/source/Petrus_Wernink), helming Dutch boat *Oranje*, Carp took the Gold in the [6.5 Metre](/source/6.5_Metre_(keelboat)). In the [1924 Olympics](/source/Sailing_at_the_1924_Summer_Olympics_(6_metre_class)) Carp took part of the competition in the [6 Metre](/source/6_Metre) with the Dutch boat *Willem Six* with crew members [Anthonij Guépin](/source/Anthonij_Gu%C3%A9pin) and [Jan Vreede](/source/Jan_Vreede) Carp took this time the bronze medal. In the [1936 Olympics](/source/Sailing_at_the_1936_Summer_Olympics_%E2%80%93_6_Metre) Carp returned to the Olympics as helmsman of the Dutch [6 Metre](/source/6_Metre) *De Ruyter* this time with crew members [Ansco Dokkum](/source/Ansco_Dokkum), [Kees Jonker](/source/Kees_Jonker), [Herman Looman](/source/Herman_Looman), [Ernst Moltzer](/source/Ernst_Moltzer) and finished eighth overall.[1]

## Professional life

Joop Carp studied law at the [Leiden University](/source/Leiden_University). He graduated in 1921. Shortly after that he became vice-president of [Fokker Aircraft](/source/Fokker). Here he was involved in the development of the first large commercial aircraft.

Later Carp became more involved with the exploitation of important inventions like the 'Oertz-rudder', de 'Frigoplate' en de 'Frost-O-Matic Ice Cream Vending Machine'. In 1926 he opened his own office in [New York City](/source/New_York_City). Later he emigrated to [South Africa](/source/South_Africa).

## Personal life

Carp married, and divorced, Johanna Sybille Hall who was also an Olympic athlete in [Dressage](/source/Dressage) during the Olympic Games of [1960](/source/Equestrian_at_the_1960_Summer_Olympics), [1964](/source/Equestrian_at_the_1964_Summer_Olympics) and [1968](/source/Equestrian_at_the_1968_Summer_Olympics).
