He was adopted as a baby and grew up in Hopewell, New Jersey.<ref name="DG" /> He studied at the [Manhattan School of Music](/source/Manhattan_School_of_Music) in New York as a [baritone](/source/baritone) before further study at the [Mannes School of Music](/source/Mannes_School_of_Music) where he made the transition to [tenor](/source/tenor).<ref name="DG" /><ref name="Semperoper" />
