**Jonathan Edward Haskel**[1] (born 13 August 1963) is a British economist and professor of economics at [Imperial Business School](/source/Imperial_Business_School) at [Imperial College London](/source/Imperial_College_London).

Haskel is a [board](/source/UK_Statistics_Authority#Current_board_members) member of the [UK Statistics Authority](/source/UK_Statistics_Authority),[2] a former member of the [Bank of England](/source/Bank_of_England)'s [Monetary Policy Committee](/source/Monetary_Policy_Committee_(United_Kingdom))[3] and a member of the [Financial Conduct Authority](/source/Financial_Conduct_Authority) Competition Decisions Committee and the Payment System Regulator Enforcement and Competition Decisions Committee.[4]

## Early life

Haskel was educated at [King's College School](/source/King's_College_School).[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*] He studied Economics at the [University of Bristol](/source/University_of_Bristol) (BSc) and at the [London School of Economics](/source/London_School_of_Economics) (MSc and PhD),[5] with his PhD under the supervision of [Christopher Pissarides](/source/Christopher_Pissarides).[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*]

## Academic career

Prior to joining [Imperial College London](/source/Imperial_College_London), Haskel was a professor and head of the economics department at [Queen Mary University of London](/source/Queen_Mary_University_of_London).[6]

Haskel has taught at the [University of Bristol](/source/University_of_Bristol) and [London Business School](/source/London_Business_School) and been a visiting professor at the [Tuck School of Business](/source/Tuck_School_of_Business), [Dartmouth College](/source/Dartmouth_College), US; [Stern School of Business](/source/Stern_School_of_Business), [New York University](/source/New_York_University), US; and visiting researcher at the [Australian National University](/source/Australian_National_University).[6]

Haskel is a professor of economics at [Imperial College Business School](/source/Imperial_College_Business_School), specialising in innovation and productivity.[3]

## Other roles

In February 2016, he was appointed as a non-executive director of the [UK Statistics Authority](/source/UK_Statistics_Authority).[3] A position he held until January 2023.[5]

In September 2015, Haskel has been appointed as a member of the [Financial Conduct Authority](/source/Financial_Conduct_Authority) Competition Decisions Committee and the Payment System Regulator Enforcement and Competition Decisions Committee.[4]

In May 2018, it was announced that Haskel would become a member of the [Bank of England](/source/Bank_of_England)'s [Monetary Policy Committee](/source/Monetary_Policy_Committee_(United_Kingdom)) (MPC), replacing [Ian McCafferty](/source/Ian_McCafferty_(economist)) from 1 September. He was in the MPC until August 2024.[7][3] There were four women on the five-person shortlist.[7] He was appointed [Commander of the Order of the British Empire](/source/Order_of_the_British_Empire) in the [2018 Birthday Honours](/source/2018_Birthday_Honours).

## Personal life

He is the son of politician [Simon Haskel](/source/Simon_Haskel). He is married to the artist Sue Haskel, and they have two daughters.[8]
