He is the founder and leader of the Beth Israel Worship Center in [Wayne, New Jersey](/source/Wayne,_New_Jersey). His ministry weaves together contemporary American politics with right-wing Christian beliefs and the text of the [Christian Bible](/source/Christian_Bible). He is a controversial figure among [Christians](/source/Christians), [Jews](/source/Jews), and secular historians. ## Personal life Born in [New York State](/source/New_York_State), Cahn was raised in a [Jewish](/source/Jewish) family, the son of a [Holocaust](/source/Holocaust) refugee, and attended the [synagogue](/source/Synagogue) frequently. Aged 20, after a near-death experience, he converted to Messianic Judaism.[1] He graduated from the [State University of New York at Purchase](/source/State_University_of_New_York_at_Purchase).[2] Cahn started "Hope of the World Ministries", an international outreach of evangelism and compassion projects for the needy and currently is the president of the organization.[3] He is married to Brazilian Renata and they have three children.[1] ## Ministry Cahn is the head of the Beth Israel Worship Center congregation whose "liturgy focuses on [Jesus](/source/Jesus) as Savior." The group had been located in [Garfield, New Jersey](/source/Garfield,_New_Jersey), throughout the 1990s but moved to [Wayne, New Jersey](/source/Wayne,_New_Jersey), in 2008. Their arrival in Wayne was viewed with suspicion by local [Jewish](/source/Judaism) clergy: [Messianism](/source/Messianic_Judaism#Reception) is considered a form of [Evangelical Christianity](/source/Evangelical_Christianity) by most mainstream [Christian denominations](/source/Christian_denomination) and all [movements of Judaism](/source/Movements_of_Judaism) and frequently [proselytizes to Jews](/source/Proselytization_and_counter-proselytization_of_Jews). With the arrival of Cahn's group, the [YM-YWHA of North Jersey](/source/Jewish_Community_Center#History) held a counter-missionary event with [Jews for Judaism](/source/Jews_for_Judaism). Cahn told reporters that "the congregation has no intention of 'targeting' the Jewish community.
