**Jonathan Owen Jones** (born 19 April 1954[3]) is a [Welsh](/source/Wales) politician. He was the [Labour](/source/Labour_Party_(UK)) and [Co-operative](/source/Co-operative_Party) [Member of Parliament](/source/Member_of_Parliament_(United_Kingdom)) for [Cardiff Central](/source/Cardiff_Central_(UK_Parliament_constituency)) from 1992 to 2005. He was then an unsuccessful candidate for [Change UK](/source/Change_UK) in [Wales](/source/Wales_(European_Parliament_constituency)) at the [2019 European Parliament election](/source/2019_European_Parliament_election_in_the_United_Kingdom).

## Early life

Jon Owen Jones was born in [Maerdy](/source/Maerdy). He attended the [Ysgol Gyfun Rhydfelen](/source/Ysgol_Gyfun_Rhydfelen) school on Glyndwr Avenue in [Rhydyfelin](/source/Rhydyfelin), [Pontypridd](/source/Pontypridd).[3] He studied at the [University of East Anglia](/source/University_of_East_Anglia), gaining a [BSc](/source/Bachelor_of_Science) in Ecology in 1975. In 1976 he went to [University College of Wales, Cardiff](/source/Cardiff_University), gaining a [PGCE](/source/Postgraduate_Certificate_in_Education). Jones was a teacher before entering Parliament, teaching biology and science in comprehensive schools from 1977 to 1992.[3] He was president of Caerphilly [NUT](/source/National_Union_of_Teachers) in 1983, then Mid Glamorgan NUT in 1984. He was a councillor for the [Adamsdown ward](/source/Adamsdown_(electoral_ward)) on [Cardiff City Council](/source/Cardiff_City_Council) from 1987 to 1992.

## Parliamentary career

Jones was the Labour and Co-operative MP for the Cardiff Central constituency from 1992 to 2005. He was a [whip](/source/Whip_(politics)) from 1993 to 1998, then a junior minister at the [Welsh Office](/source/Welsh_Office) until 1999. He won his seat again in 2001 with a majority of 659. He lost his seat at the [2005 general election](/source/2005_United_Kingdom_general_election) to [Jenny Willott](/source/Jenny_Willott) of the [Liberal Democrats](/source/Liberal_Democrats_(UK)).

As part of the investigation into [United Kingdom parliamentary expenses scandal](/source/United_Kingdom_parliamentary_expenses_scandal), Jones was found to have over claimed £513.10.[4]

## Post-parliament

He chaired the [Forestry Commission](/source/Forestry_Commission)'s National Committee for Wales until April 2013, when its duties were subsumed by [Natural Resources Wales](/source/Natural_Resources_Wales), with Jones snubbed from the NRW board by Welsh Labour Environment Minister [John Griffiths](/source/John_Griffiths_(Welsh_politician)).[5]

In April 2019, It was announced that he would be the lead candidate for [Change UK](/source/Change_UK) in [Wales](/source/Wales_(European_Parliament_constituency)) in the [2019 European Elections](/source/2019_European_Parliament_election_in_the_United_Kingdom).[6] He was not elected.
