Day initially trained as a [solicitor](/source/solicitor), and joined the Civil Service in 1979. During his career, Day worked in the Ministry of Defence, the [Foreign & Commonwealth Office](/source/Foreign_%26_Commonwealth_Office) and the [Cabinet Office](/source/Cabinet_Office), was seconded to [NATO](/source/NATO), and did a year's sabbatical at [Harvard University](/source/Harvard_University).
