# Johnston Passage

**Johnston Passage** is a channel in Antarctica, running north–south and separating the [Amiot Islands](/source/Amiot_Islands) from the southwestern part of [Adelaide Island](/source/Adelaide_Island). It was named by the [UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee](/source/UK_Antarctic_Place-Names_Committee) for Captain [William Johnston](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=William_Johnston_(mariner)&action=edit&redlink=1), from 1956 to 1962 Master of [RRS *John Biscoe*](/source/RRS_John_Biscoe_(1956)), the ship which assisted the [Royal Navy Hydrographic Survey Unit](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Royal_Navy_Hydrographic_Survey_Unit&action=edit&redlink=1) in charting this area in 1963.[1]
