==Military career==
Born on 13 April 1898 at [Newbury, Berkshire](/source/Newbury%2C_Berkshire), Winterton was educated at [Oundle School](/source/Oundle_School) and at the [Royal Military Academy, Woolwich](/source/Royal_Military_Academy%2C_Woolwich), from where he was [commissioned](/source/Officer_(armed_forces)) into the [Royal Field Artillery](/source/Royal_Field_Artillery) in 1917,<ref>{{London Gazette|issue=30119|page=5633|date=5 June 1917|supp=y}}</ref> during [World War I](/source/World_War_I).<ref name=lh>[http://www.kcl.ac.uk/lhcma/locreg/WINTERTON.shtml Liddell Hart Centre for Military Archives]</ref>{{sfn|Smart|2005|p=343}}

After the war, he married, in 1921, and was [adjutant](/source/adjutant) to a [Territorial Army](/source/Army_Reserve_(United_Kingdom)) (TA) unit, from 1925 to 1929, before being posted to [Burma](/source/Burma) in 1930 and later attended the [Staff College, Quetta](/source/Pakistan_Command_and_Staff_College) from 1936 to 1937.{{sfn|Smart|2005|p=343}} In 1938 he was sent to the [Staff College, Camberley](/source/Staff_College%2C_Camberley) as an instructor, and transferred to the [Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry](/source/Oxfordshire_and_Buckinghamshire_Light_Infantry) upon the recommendation of the Commandant of the Staff College, Camberley, [Major General](/source/Major-general_(United_Kingdom)) [Bernard Paget](/source/Bernard_Paget).<ref name=obituary>Obituary Royal Green Jackets Chronicle 1987 p. 275.</ref>

He served in [World War II](/source/World_War_II) initially as Deputy Adjutant and Quartermaster General for [I Corps](/source/I_Corps_(United_Kingdom)) in which role he took part in the [Dunkirk evacuation](/source/Dunkirk_evacuation).<ref name=lh/> He became Chief of Staff to the General Officer Commanding Burma, Harold Alexander, in 1942 and was given command of a brigade in Burma in 1943 and then in Italy in 1944.<ref name=lh/>

After the war, he became Deputy Commissioner of the [Allied Control Commission for Austria](/source/Allied_Control_Commission_for_Austria) 1945 and then became British High Commissioner and Commander-in-Chief [Austria](/source/Austria) in 1950.<ref name=lh/> He went on to be Military Governor and Commander of the British and US Zone of the [Free Territory of Trieste](/source/Free_Territory_of_Trieste) from 1951 to 1954 before retiring in 1955.<ref name=lh/> Winterton was Colonel Commandant of the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry from 1955 to 1958 and Colonel Commandant of the [1st Green Jackets (43rd and 52nd)](/source/1st_Green_Jackets_(43rd_and_52nd)) from 1958 to 1960.<ref name=obituary/> He lived in [Newbury](/source/Newbury%2C_Berkshire), [Berkshire](/source/Berkshire).<ref name=obituary/>

==Personal life==
He married Helen Cross in 1921 with whom he was to have three sons.<ref name=obituary/> 

One son, Cecil John Winterton (1922–2012), was an Anglican priest from 1951 to 1955. He then converted to Catholicism, joined the [Oratory of Saint Philip Neri](/source/Oratory_of_Saint_Philip_Neri) in 1961 (taking the [religious name](/source/Religious_name) "Gregory"), and was ordained as a [Catholic priest](/source/Catholic_priest) in 1963. He was [Provost](/source/Provost_(religion)) of the [Birmingham Oratory](/source/Birmingham_Oratory) (1971-1992), and was also a teacher at [St Philip's Grammar School](/source/St_Philip's_School), [Birmingham](/source/Birmingham).<ref>{{cite web |title=Biographies: Gregory Winterton |url=https://www.birminghamoratory.org.uk/gregory-winterton/# |website=The Birmingham Oratory |access-date=12 January 2024}}</ref>
