# John Veldman

**John Fitzgerald Veldman** (born 24 February 1968) is a Dutch former professional [footballer](/source/Association_football) who played as a [defender](/source/Defender_(association_football)). Veldman spent his entire career in the [Eredivisie](/source/Eredivisie), playing 297 matches from 1986 to 2001. He began his professional career at [PSV Eindhoven](/source/PSV_Eindhoven), then moved on to [Willem II](/source/Willem_II_(football_club)), [Sparta Rotterdam](/source/Sparta_Rotterdam), [Ajax](/source/AFC_Ajax), [Vitesse](/source/SBV_Vitesse) and [RBC Roosendaal](/source/RBC_Roosendaal). While at Sparta, he started in various defensive positions and helped the club reach the final of the [KNVB Cup](/source/KNVB_Cup) in 1996.

Veldman earned a single cap for the [Netherlands national team](/source/Netherlands_national_football_team), which came on 24 April 1996 in a 1–0 loss to [Germany](/source/Germany_national_football_team). He was included in the [Dutch squad](/source/UEFA_Euro_1996_squads#Netherlands) for [Euro 1996](/source/1996_UEFA_European_Football_Championship) but did not make an appearance.

His brother, [Elfried Veldman](/source/Elfried_Veldman), died in the crash of [Surinam Airways Flight 764](/source/Surinam_Airways_Flight_764).[1]
