As an amateur his most notable achievement came when he won the world title in the 100 km [team time trial](/source/Team_time_trial), alongside [Rob Harmeling](/source/Rob_Harmeling), [Tom Cordes](/source/Tom_Cordes) and [Gerrit de Vries](/source/Gerrit_de_Vries_(cyclist)), while also finishing second in the individual road race.[1] His biggest individual success as a pro was winning [Dwars door Vlaanderen](/source/Dwars_door_Vlaanderen) (1988) and the [Scheldeprijs](/source/Scheldeprijs) (1990). Talen rode in three editions of the [Tour de France](/source/Tour_de_France).
