# John Stitt

**John Albert Stitt** (November 21, 1894 – December 30, 1976) was an American [college football](/source/College_football) player and coach. He was the first head football coach at Bowling Green State Normal School—now known as [Bowling Green State University](/source/Bowling_Green_State_University)—serving for one season in 1919 and compiling a record of 0–3.

Stitt was born November 21, 1894, in [Rudolph, Ohio](/source/Rudolph,_Ohio), to William and Mary Shepard Smith. He attended Western Reserve University before transferring to the [Case School of Applied Science](/source/Case_School_of_Engineering); the two schools later merged to form [Case Western Reserve University](/source/Case_Western_Reserve_University). Stitt graduated from Case in 1918 with an engineering degree before serving in the [United States Army Air Service](/source/United_States_Army_Air_Service) during [World War I](/source/World_War_I).[1][2] He was stationed at [Kelly Field](/source/Kelly_Field) in [San Antonio](/source/San_Antonio) until his discharge from military service in 1919.[3] He went to Bowling Green in September 1919 to coach the football team.[4]

Stitt later worked as an oil producer. He married Annabell Poole in 1933. Stitt died on December 30, 1976, at McCullough-Hyde Memorial Hospital in [Oxford, Ohio](/source/Oxford,_Ohio).[2]
