**Sir John Ribat** [MSC](/source/Missionaries_of_the_Sacred_Heart) [KBE](/source/Knight_Commander_of_the_Order_of_the_British_Empire) (born 9 February 1957) is a Papua New Guinean [prelate](/source/Prelate) of the [Catholic Church](/source/Catholic_Church) and a [cardinal](/source/Cardinal_(Catholic_Church)) since 2016. He has been [Archbishop of Port Moresby](/source/Roman_Catholic_Archdiocese_of_Port_Moresby) since 2008.

## Biography

Ribat was born in Volavolo, [East New Britain](/source/East_New_Britain), [Papua New Guinea](/source/Papua_New_Guinea). He professed as a member of the [Missionaries of the Sacred Heart of Jesus](/source/Missionaries_of_the_Sacred_Heart_of_Jesus) in February 1979.[1] He was ordained a priest on 1 December 1985.

He worked as a parish priest, continued his studies in [Manila](/source/Manila), and served as master of novices for the Missionaries in [Suva](/source/Suva), [Fiji](/source/Fiji).[1]

On 30 October 2000, [Pope John Paul II](/source/Pope_John_Paul_II) named him auxiliary bishop of [Bereina](/source/Bereina) and titular bishop of [Macriana Minor](/source/Byzacena#Episcopal_sees). He was consecrated bishop on 11 February 2001 and named Bishop of Bereina on 12 February 2002. [Pope Benedict XVI](/source/Pope_Benedict_XVI) named him Coadjutor Archbishop of [Port Moresby](/source/Roman_Catholic_Archdiocese_of_Port_Moresby) on 16 April 2007 and he succeeded to that office on 26 March 2008.

Between 2011 and 2014, Ribat was the President of the [Catholic Bishops Conference of Papua New Guinea and Solomon Islands](/source/Catholic_Bishops_Conference_of_Papua_New_Guinea_and_Solomon_Islands).[2]

He was conferred a knighthood on 12 June 2016 in the [Queen's Birthday Honours list](/source/Queen's_Official_Birthday).[3]

On 9 October 2016, [Pope Francis](/source/Pope_Francis) announced that he planned to raise Ribat to the rank of cardinal at a consistory scheduled for 19 November 2016.[4] He was made a Cardinal Priest on that day and assigned to the titular church of [San Giovanni Battista de Rossi](/source/San_Giovanni_Battista_de_Rossi_(church)).[5] He is the first cardinal from his country.[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*]

Francis made him a member of the [Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development](/source/Dicastery_for_Promoting_Integral_Human_Development) on 23 December 2017.[6]

He participated as a [cardinal elector](/source/Cardinal_electors_in_the_2025_papal_conclave) in the [2025 papal conclave](/source/2025_papal_conclave) that elected [Pope Leo XIV](/source/Pope_Leo_XIV).[7]
