# John Pinsent

**John Pinsent** (2 November 1922 – 3 February 1995 in [Liverpool](/source/Liverpool), [England](/source/England)) was an English [classical scholar](/source/Classical_scholar), especially in the area of [Greek mythology](/source/Greek_mythology).[1] He founded and edited an [academic journal](/source/Academic_journal) on [classical antiquity](/source/Classical_antiquity), the *[Liverpool Classical Monthly](/source/Liverpool_Classical_Monthly)*. It was established in 1976 and continued until 1995.[2] Pinsent was its [editor-in-chief](/source/Editor-in-chief) for its complete lifespan[1] and, because of this, it was sometimes known as *Pinsent's Paper*.

Pinsent was educated at [St Edmund's School](/source/St_Edmund's_School), [Canterbury](/source/Canterbury), followed by [Oriel College, Oxford](/source/Oriel_College,_Oxford). His university studies were interrupted during [World War II](/source/World_War_II) to serve in the [Royal Air Force](/source/Royal_Air_Force). He flew [Catalina](/source/Consolidated_PBY_Catalina) flying boats based at [Loch Erne](/source/Loch_Erne) in [Northern Ireland](/source/Northern_Ireland).

From 1950–1953, Pinsent was an [assistant lecturer](/source/Assistant_lecturer) in [Greek](/source/Ancient_Greek) at [Liverpool University](/source/Liverpool_University), followed by becoming [lecturer](/source/Lecturer#United_Kingdom) (1953–1969), [senior lecturer](/source/Senior_lecturer) (1969–1978), and [reader](/source/Reader_(academic_rank)) (1978–1980). Between 1983–1987, he was [Public Orator](/source/Public_Orator) of the university. He authored several books on [classical Greek](/source/Classical_Greek) subjects,[3] including *Greek Mythology*, first published in 1969. Pinsent's published books include:[4]

Pinsent was married three times, the third time to the former sister-in-law of the actor [John Hurt](/source/John_Hurt).[citation needed] His surviving son is the cartoonist [Ed Pinsent](/source/Ed_Pinsent), and is from John's second marriage, as is his daughter.
