# John Nation

[Brigadier-General](/source/Brigadier-General) **John James Henry Nation**, [CVO](/source/Royal_Victorian_Order), [DSO](/source/Distinguished_Service_Order) (5 December 1874 – 5 November 1946)[1] was a [British Army](/source/British_Army) officer who became a [Conservative Party](/source/Conservative_Party_(UK)) politician.

## Career

Nation was commissioned a [second lieutenant](/source/Second_lieutenant) in the [Royal Engineers](/source/Royal_Engineers) on 1 April 1895, and promoted to [lieutenant](/source/Lieutenant_(British_Army_and_Royal_Marines)) on 1 April 1898. He served in the [Second Boer War](/source/Second_Boer_War) in [South Africa](/source/South_Africa) from 1899 to 1902. He was first posted in the [Orange Free State](/source/Orange_Free_State), including engagements at Vet River and Zand River; later in the [Transvaal](/source/Transvaal_Colony), where he was present at actions near [Johannesburg](/source/Johannesburg) and [Pretoria](/source/Pretoria), including the battles of [Diamond Hill](/source/Battle_of_Diamond_Hill) (June 1900) and [Belfast](/source/Battle_of_Belfast) (August 1900); and eventually in [Cape Colony](/source/Cape_Colony), south of the Orange River.[2] Following the end of the war in June 1902, he left [Cape Town](/source/Cape_Town) for England on the *SS Moravian* in August 1902.[3] He was stationed in [Buncrana](/source/Buncrana) in 1903.[2]

Nation served in the [First World War](/source/First_World_War) and at the headquarter of [Marshal Foch](/source/Ferdinand_Foch) 1918–19. From 1927 to 1931 he was Military attaché Rome.[4] He was elected at the [1931 general election](/source/1931_United_Kingdom_general_election) as [Member of Parliament](/source/Member_of_Parliament_(United_Kingdom)) (MP) for [Kingston upon Hull East](/source/Kingston_upon_Hull_East_(UK_Parliament_constituency)), defeating the sitting [Labour](/source/Labour_Party_(UK)) MP [George Muff](/source/George_Muff,_1st_Baron_Calverley). At the [1935 general election](/source/1935_United_Kingdom_general_election), Nation lost the seat to Muff, and never stood for election to the [House of Commons](/source/House_of_Commons_of_the_United_Kingdom) again.[5]

General Nation worked as a war correspondent with the BEF. In 1940 he became Zone Commander of the [Home Guard (United Kingdom)](/source/Home_Guard_(United_Kingdom)) until 1942.[4]

## Family

He was married to Olive Elizabeth, widow of Capt Walter Rubens.[4]
