# John M. Fitzpatrick

**John M. Fitzpatrick** (15 July 1948 – 14 May 2014) was an Irish [urologist](/source/Urologist), emeritus professor of surgery at the [University College Dublin School of Medicine & Medical Science](/source/School_of_Medicine_and_Medical_Science_(University_College_Dublin)) and Head of Research at the [Irish Cancer Society](/source/Irish_Cancer_Society).

Fitzpatrick's early childhood was spent in [Ballsbridge](/source/Ballsbridge), Dublin, and he was educated at [Gonzaga College](/source/Gonzaga_College) where he learnt history and literature from [Jesuits](/source/Jesuit), following which he entered the [University College Dublin](/source/University_College_Dublin) to study medicine. In 1975 he became a Fellow of the [Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland](/source/Royal_College_of_Surgeons_in_Ireland). From 1977 to 1981, he worked at the [St. Peter's Hospitals](/source/St_Peter's_Hospital,_Covent_Garden) and the Institute of Urology in London, where he watched emerging [robotic surgery](/source/Robotic_surgery) and the then new [minimally invasive surgical techniques](/source/Minimally_invasive_procedure).

In 1981 Fitzpatrick returned to Dublin to take up the post of consultant urologist and senior lecturer in urology in the [Meath](/source/Meath_Hospital) and [St. James’ Hospitals](/source/St._James's_Hospital) and [Trinity College Dublin](/source/Trinity_College_Dublin). The following year he was appointed as a consultant urologist and chairman of the Department of Surgery at the [Mater Misericordiae Hospital](/source/Mater_Misericordiae_University_Hospital) and professor of surgery at [University College Dublin](/source/University_College_Dublin).

## Early life

John Michael Fitzpatrick was born on 15 July 1948, one of three sons of a prominent lawyer and a mother who was a historian.[1][2] His early childhood was spent in [Ballsbridge](/source/Ballsbridge), Dublin, and he was educated at [Gonzaga College](/source/Gonzaga_College) where he learnt history and literature from [Jesuits](/source/Jesuit).[1][3]

Before going to [University College Dublin](/source/University_College_Dublin), Fitzpatrick travelled with a teenage friend to Egypt, Jordan and Syria and at the age of 19 visited Czechoslovakia, just before the [Prague Spring](/source/Prague_Spring) of 1968. He won a scholarship to study the [greats](/source/Literae_Humaniores) at [Oxford University](/source/Oxford_University), but chose to go to medical school in Dublin instead.[1]

## Early career

In 1971 Fitzpatrick qualified in medicine from the [University College Dublin](/source/University_College_Dublin) (UCD) and completed his [internship](/source/Internship_(medicine)) at [St. Vincent's University Hospital](/source/St._Vincent's_University_Hospital).[4][5] In 1975 he became a Fellow of the [Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland](/source/Royal_College_of_Surgeons_in_Ireland) and received his master's degree in surgery at UCD the following year.[4][5] Subsequently, he moved to the UK where he watched emerging [robotic surgery](/source/Robotic_surgery) and the then new minimally invasive surgical techniques.[4][5] From 1977 to 1981, he worked in the field of [interventional radiology](/source/Interventional_radiology), [men's health](/source/Andrology) and [urodynamics](/source/Urodynamics) at the [St. Peter's Hospitals](/source/St_Peter's_Hospital,_Covent_Garden) and the Institute of Urology in London, interrupted by a brief research placement in [Mainz](/source/Mainz), Germany.[4][5] In London, he was mentored by [John Wickham](/source/John_Wickham_(urologist)) and his contemporaries included [Anthony J. Costello](/source/Anthony_J._Costello) and [Christopher Woodhouse](/source/Christopher_Woodhouse,_6th_Baron_Terrington).[3]

## Later career

In 1981 Fitzpatrick returned to Dublin to take up the post of consultant urologist and senior lecturer in urology in the [Meath](/source/Meath_Hospital) and [St. James’ Hospitals](/source/St._James's_Hospital) and [Trinity College Dublin](/source/Trinity_College_Dublin).[4][5] The following year he was appointed as a consultant urologist and chairman of the Department of Surgery at the [Mater Misericordiae Hospital](/source/Mater_Misericordiae_University_Hospital) and professor of surgery at [University College Dublin](/source/University_College_Dublin).[4][5] He was among the first in Ireland and Britain to perform surgical removals of the [prostate](/source/Prostate) if prostate cancer was still confined to the gland.[2]

Fitzpatrick was emeritus professor of surgery at the [University College Dublin School of Medicine & Medical Science](/source/School_of_Medicine_and_Medical_Science_(University_College_Dublin)) and Head of Research at the [Irish Cancer Society](/source/Irish_Cancer_Society).[1][6]

He wrote more than 100 books chapters, authored more than 280 peer-reviewed journal articles and edited 18 textbooks. For ten years he served as editor in chief of the *[British Journal of Urology International](/source/British_Journal_of_Urology_International)* and was elected president of the [British Association of Urological Surgeons](/source/British_Association_of_Urological_Surgeons) and of the [Irish Society of Urology](/source/Irish_Society_of_Urology).[1] He helped create [The Urology Foundation](/source/The_Urology_Foundation) in 1994.[5] In 2004 he was awarded the BAUS [St Peter's Medal](/source/St_Peter's_Medal).[7]

## Personal life

Fitzpatrick has two brothers, a lawyer and a [general practitioner](/source/General_practitioner).[8]

## Death

Fitzpatrick was taken ill in his own gym at home, and died on 14 May 2014 from a [subarachnoid haemorrhage](/source/Subarachnoid_haemorrhage).[1][5]
