**John Joseph Mitchell** (May 9, 1873 – September 13, 1925) was a lawyer and politician.

## Biography

Mitchell was born in [Marlborough, Massachusetts](/source/Marlborough%2C_Massachusetts), on May 9, 1873. He attended [public schools](/source/Public_school_(government_funded)), [Boston College](/source/Boston_College), and the [Albany Law School](/source/Albany_Law_School). Mitchell was admitted to the bar and commenced [practice](/source/Practice_of_law) in Marlborough. He was elected a member of the [Massachusetts House of Representatives](/source/Massachusetts_House_of_Representatives), and served in the [Massachusetts State Senate](/source/Massachusetts_State_Senate).

Mitchell was elected as a [Democrat](/source/Democratic_Party_(United_States)) to the [61st United States Congress](/source/61st_United_States_Congress) to fill the vacancy caused by the death of [Charles Q. Tirrell](/source/Charles_Q._Tirrell), serving from November 8, 1910, to March 3, 1911. However, he lost a simultaneous election to the [62nd United States Congress](/source/62nd_United_States_Congress), and therefore only served until the completion of the open term.

He was elected to the [Sixty-third Congress](/source/63rd_United_States_Congress) to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of [John W. Weeks](/source/John_W._Weeks) and served from April 15, 1913 to March 3, 1915. He was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1914 to the [Sixty-fourth Congress](/source/64th_United_States_Congress).

On February 5, 1915, [Woodrow Wilson](/source/Woodrow_Wilson) nominated Mitchell for the position of [United States Marshal](/source/United_States_Marshal) for Massachusetts.[1] He took office on April 1, 1915.[2] In 1920, he was appointed collector of internal revenue for the district of Massachusetts. His nomination was confirmed by the [United States Senate](/source/United_States_Senate) on March 9, 1920 and he took office on April 1, 1920.[3][4] He resigned in 1921 and practiced as an attorney in [Boston](/source/Boston%2C_Massachusetts) until his death in the Brighton neighborhood of Boston on September 13, 1925.[5] He was interred in Immaculate Conception Cemetery in Marlborough.
