He went from there to [St John's College, Cambridge](/source/St_John's_College%2C_Cambridge) where he gained his PhD in 1958. == Career == {{More citations needed section|date=January 2023}} In spite of a job offer by [Rolls-Royce](/source/Rolls-Royce_Limited), Horlock accepted the role of professor and head of the mechanical engineering department at [University of Liverpool](/source/University_of_Liverpool).
